HOUSEHOLDS AND FAMILIES:
From 2005-2007 there were 64,000 households in Clay County. The average household size was 2.7 people.

Families made up 76 percent of the households in Clay County. This figure includes both married-couple families (59 percent) and other families (18 percent). NATIVITY AND LANGUAGE: Five percent of the people living in Clay County from 2005-2007 there were foreign born. Ninety-five percent was native, including 41 percent who were born in Florida.

OCCUPATIONS AND TYPE OF EMPLOYER: Among the most common occupations were: Management, professional, and related occupations, 34 percent; Sales and office occupations, 29 percent; Service occupations, 15 percent; Construction, extraction, maintenance and repair occupations, 13 percent; and Production, transportation, and material moving occupations, 10 percent. Seventy-eight percent of the people employed were Private wage and salary workers; 17 percent was Federal, state, or local government workers; and 5 percent was Self-employed in own not incorporated business workers.

TRAVEL TO WORK: Eighty-three percent of Clay County workers drove to work alone from 2005-2007, 10 percent carpooled, less than 0.5 percent took public transportation, and 3 percent used other means. The remaining 4 percent worked at home. Among those who commuted to work, it took them on average 33.2 minutes to get to work.

INCOME: The median income of households in Clay County was $59,792. Eighty-four percent of the households received earnings and 25 percent received retirement income other than Social Security. Twenty-four percent of the households received Social Security. The average income from Social Security was $14,735. These income sources are not mutually exclusive; that is, some households received income from more than one source.

POVERTY AND PARTICIPATION IN GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS: From 2005-2007, 8 percent of people were in poverty. Eleven percent of related children under 18 were below the poverty level, compared with 9 percent of people 65 years old and over. OCCUPIED HOUSING UNIT CHARACTERISTICS: From 2005-2007, Clay County had 64,000 occupied housing units - 50,000 (78 percent) owner occupied and 14,000 (22 percent) renter occupied. Four percent of the households did not have telephone service and 2 percent of the households did not have access to a car, truck, or van for private use. Multi Vehicle households were not rare. Forty-seven percent had two vehicles and another 24 percent had three or more.

HOUSING COSTS: The median monthly housing costs for mortgaged owners was $1,344, nonmortgaged owners $345, and renters $916.
